How to Win Solitaire

Is every game of Solitaire winnable? Understand the odds and learn the advanced tactics needed to clear the deck.

Is Every Game Winnable?

The short answer is no. Unlike some variations like FreeCell, a standard game of Klondike Solitaire is heavily dependent on the initial shuffle. Because cards are dealt face-down and you cannot see them, it is mathematically impossible to win every single game, regardless of your skill level.

Klondike Turn 1 (Draw 1)

In the easier variation where you draw one card at a time from the stock pile, statisticians estimate that roughly 80% to 82% of all games are technically winnable if played perfectly. However, because you cannot see the face-down cards, a human player will likely win around 40% to 50% of the time with good strategy.

Klondike Turn 3 (Draw 3)

In the traditional, more difficult variation where you draw three cards at a time and can only use the top card, the odds drop significantly. Only about 79% of games are theoretically winnable, and human players typically only win around 15% to 20% of their games.

Advanced Winning Tactics

Manage the Waste Pile carefully

In Draw 3, the order of cards in the waste pile matters immensely. Sometimes it is strategic to not play a card from the waste pile, because playing it will shift the order of all subsequent draws, potentially hiding a card you need on the next pass through the deck.

Color Coordination

When you have a choice between placing a red Jack on a black Queen or a black Jack on a red Queen, look at the cards you need to move next. If you need to move a red 10, you should prioritize building the stack that ends with a black Jack.

The "Undo" Button is Your Friend

In physical Solitaire, peeking under cards is considered cheating. In digital Solitaire, the Undo button is a built-in feature! If you have a choice between two moves, make one, see what card is revealed, and if it's not helpful, use the Undo button to try the other path. There is no shame in using digital tools to boost your win rate.
